Bounty Brand

Down at the cloud line, in Sector 46, where the work is done and the feeds are watching for it.

The night shift started as a reversal of her day. Instead of taking the train up, she went down. Rezo was a colossal octagonal pyramid, and it widened as you descended. Where the Heights was all towers, Midtown was block upon block, each ring wider than the one above.

She slipped along in the flow of human traffic. Security was designed as a one-way filter. Bottlenecks gated movement up through the levels; going down was unrestricted. She avoided the comfortable mag-trains and took a crowded service line down and across to Ring 4. Her suit drew a few sideways glances, but people on these lines knew better than to attract the attention of someone dressed like she might complicate their lives. Most people from the Heights were in their sleep cycle at this hour, and those in her crowded car looked like service and maintenance personnel. Likely residents of the levels she was heading towards.

A crowd of workers in drab jackets queues along a rail toward a row of lit gates in a vast concrete transit hall at night, while past a dividing column an almost empty polished concourse runs by a lift bank to a glass wall and the lights of the city far below.
A one-way filter

It was no accident that LUST was a night persona. Kill contracts were permitted only within certain time windows when executed above the lower levels. When respectable, or at least wealthy, citizens would be sleeping. It was one of the convenient factors that made the double life workable. Once she was down into the Midtown levels Rezo earned its name as a megacity. Over five hundred levels of tightly packed layers. No towers, just block upon block of densely populated chaos. She was heading to where the outer skin of Rezo peeled back: what had been the highest point of the city centuries ago, since half-encased as the megacity grew over it like moss. The true heart of the Narrative Economy. The Trendplateau.

The view down a deep interior canyon at night, both walls stacked with lit apartments, workshops and planted terraces receding into the depths, a small lift capsule descending the middle of the shaft and a lone figure walking a balcony walkway.
No towers, just block upon block

Gwen exited onto one of the hundreds of airwalk corridors that marked where Sector 26 connected with its neighbour and the Plateau. Where the claustrophobic streets simply ended in thin air and a drop of hundreds of metres. From her vantage point Sector 45, the Circus, was visible. This was where most of the games took place. A thousand levels of entertainment arenas stacked one atop the other. The air hit her like a wall once she cleared the shelter of the access corridor. Waste heat was one of the most serious problems of a city this size. In most areas it was managed through a network of thermal regulators. In the four sectors of the Trendplateau they did not exist, and the result was a localised weather system. It pushed her back more effectively than the guardrails would have. Her suit reacted in a heartbeat.

She felt the suit stiffen and the pressure diminished. She approached the railing and looked down into the neon madness below.

She ducked through the guardrails and out onto the glass floor of the airwalk. Her neural lace flickered to life, a private constellation behind her eyes. Vitals mapped in amber light: heart rate a steady thrum, adrenaline a slow, controlled burn. A warning flashed across her HUD, an automated safety message insisting she return to the other side of the rails. She ignored it and keyed in the map data and route options. This was one of the most densely populated areas of Midtown, and she had no intention of taking hours to cross it. She had planned the choreography with Honey on the way here. B-roll footage they would splice in to build the anticipation. A kill without an audience was just an incident. Bounty contracts needed an audience to create value.

She dismissed the alternative with a blink. Once they started streaming there was a pressure to keep the audience from swiping to a different feed.

“Spectacle field live,” Honey murmured through the suit’s audio. “We’re not just streaming, petal. We’re cinema. Inserting the brand assets and publishing the contract details.” A beat. “They’re already leaning in.

LUST didn’t answer. Words were for Gwen. Instead, she let her SecondSkin shift, the adaptive fabric tightening along her thighs, the seams glowing faintly, cyan filaments threading through black. She stepped out, right to the edge.

Below her, the Trendplateau churned: a million spectacles and twice as many eyes on them. Screens bloomed and died in fast-forward, each one bidding for attention, for her attention. Holo-banners ripped through the air, advertising everything from fake memories to experience cleansers to limited-edition grief.

NEUROBLEACH: Forget the pain! Remember the you you paid for!

Experience loss like a connoisseur.

The air smelled like something breathed by too many people. Hot and dirty.

She didn’t look down. With the suit bracing her there was no chance of falling accidentally. She stared out into the city within a city. At thousands of buildings built as if they were the top of the city, not buried inside it.

A billion signals clawed at the edges of her HUD: whisper-ads, microtransactions, the psychic static of a city that had long since replaced silence with noise. Some slipped through:

Did you bleed today? (We’re buying.)

NeuroLace Prime—maybe it’s you. (Limited-time despair discount!)

Dump him back—on the chain! (He’s not an NFT, but he could be.)

Her mouth twitched. Not a smile. A judgment. “Desperate,” she breathed, the word barely a vibration in her throat. But of course it was. Desperation was the lifeblood of Rezo. Without it, the algorithms starved.

The glide-dock yawned ahead, a circular maw of polished chrome and flickering warning lights. A hover-slab drifted in: sleek, dark, its edges blurred by mag-lift distortion. She stepped onto it without hesitation, and the world dropped.

A huge circular tunnel mouth ringed with amber lamps is set into an industrial wall, a flat dark hover-slab projecting out of it over the drop, wet decking underfoot and the blue-lit depths of the city beyond.
A circular maw of polished chrome

Magnetic currents seized her, not rough but intimate. The descent wasn’t a fall. It was a performance. The city rushed up to meet her, a kaleidoscope of neon and flesh, the wind tugging at her SecondSkin. She let her arms spread just enough, artistic, not vulnerable, and the swarm drones Honey had deployed caught the angle, feeding it to the streams in real time. The metrics would spike. They always did.

Look at her, she wanted them thinking. She’s not afraid.

Billboards rippled across the towers, adaptive ads rewriting themselves mid-air, chasing the latest sentiment shifts. A geisha-bot’s face melted into a snarling tiger, then into a weeping child, then into Gwen’s own likeness, LUST, before pixelating into static. AI graffiti tagged the sky, phrases bleeding into one another:

I CONSUME, THEREFORE I AM.

YOUR PAIN IS MY ALGORITHM.

BUY THE DIP (IN YOUR SOUL).

Music wove through it all, a tangled thread of bass so deep it vibrated in her molars, laughter-jazz from a nearby pleasure den, the static chants of a flash mob trading in collective hysteria. Somewhere, a drone choir was singing in binary. It was beautiful, in the way a hurricane was beautiful: if you were watching from orbit.

The hover-slab slowed to a hover at the transfer node, a chaotic nexus of transit pads and influencer nests, where wannabes with fresh neural laces preened for scraps of attention. Drones looped overhead like flies over rotting fruit, their cameras hungry. She stepped off without a glance.

A nexus of circular transit pads stacked at several levels under amber lamps, another tunnel mouth at the left, two small figures standing on a central disc, and the dense blue-lit city receding behind them.

Honey released a single companion drone, small, obsidian, its lens iris dilating. It hovered at shoulder height, its shadow tight against hers. “Back-view capture engaged,” the AI purred. “Three-percent shadow bias. The mystery is trending, petal. Let them wonder what you’re hiding.”

She moved.

The graffiti tunnel was a vein of the city, pulsing with live chain-tags that rewrote themselves in real time. A kid. No, an influencer, because no one was just a kid here, screamed as he dragged a razor across his forearm. The cut bloomed red, and the ink of his tattoo moved, slithering up his skin, the words PROOF OR DEATH forming in glittering, wet script. Blood sparkled in the air, caught by the tunnel’s UV lights, turning the moment into confetti. His stream metrics would explode. For a second, she almost envied the simplicity of it, pain as currency, shock as engagement. Almost.

LUST walked through it without slowing. No reaction. No acknowledgment. To pause would be to admit it mattered. And nothing mattered unless she decided it did.

Then: the plaza.

Trendplateau Ring 4 Sector 46 Level 751

Sector 46. The city inside a city. The Kill Zone, dressed up as a carnival. A place where dreams came to die or be reborn, depending on how much you were willing to pay. Transaction stalls hawked everything from bootleg emotions (“Feel nostalgia like it’s new!”) to black-market memories (“Her first kiss—now yours.”). AR theatres flickered with holograms of influencers mid-breakdown, their meltdowns looped for eternal consumption. Noise-fountains spat static and subliminals, the water replaced with liquid data that evaporated into the air like mist. Above it all, the broken theatre spire loomed, a half-collapsed monument to something that might once have been art, now an altar to whatever Rezo prayed to this week.

A wide plaza beneath a jagged half-collapsed spire, ringed by huge curved screens showing eyes, faces and lightning in violet and cyan, crowds on the floor below and pale vapour jets rising from circular fountains.

Perfect.

“Elevation vector locked,” Honey murmured, the AI’s voice clipped, clinical, but beneath it, something almost like pride. “Wind cross minimal. Surface charge at 98% efficiency. You’re clean, petal. No one’s watching the sky.”

She didn’t answer. She ran.

Her boots hit the wall’s live plating, and the magnetic sequencers in their soles engaged with a hum, rewriting gravity just for her. She sprinted upward, each step a spark. The crowd below wouldn’t see her. Not yet. But the cameras would. The drones would. And that was enough.

Honey’s voice softened, almost reverent. “You look like defiance climbing a dream.”

The rooftop was hers before she even crested the edge. She dropped to one knee, the motion fluid, practised, the SecondSkin adjusting instantly to support the pose. The scope aligned with a quiet click, the tripod unfolding from her wrist like a spider’s leg. Below, Rezo rippled, all neon and noise and life. The city didn’t sleep. It twitched.

LUST kneels on one knee at the rooftop edge in segmented armour, one hand at the scope of a tripod-mounted rifle, the lit city far below in blues and violets.

Honey’s final murmur brushed her ear. “Make it bloom, petal.”

LUST exhaled.

Honey watched her.

Watched LUST go up the tower as if gravity had been rewritten for her. To the human eye she was a smear of motion in the neon haze. Honey saw the mathematics: muscle and intent resolving into vectors and probabilities.

She spoke across the encrypted lace-link:

“Engagement phase live. Operator LUST in full bloom.”

Then: the shedding. The shell she wore tonight was still the influencer model, soft pink curves and a doll’s smile, built to be liked, shared, consumed. The seams hissed and parted. Pink plastic curled back from the mirrored edges beneath. Armour deployed, each plate locking into place.

Honey's oval chassis on a dark ground with its pink shell panels drawn back to expose chrome and dark honeycomb, gold-ringed lenses lit amber and a violet drive-ring beneath, surrounded by coin-thin lens discs and winged drone units.
Beneath that skin, the truth of her

Her HUD flickered, a cascade of golden glyphs scrolling behind her vision.

The relay locked, and for a fraction of a second she felt him at the other end of it: the weight of his attention, ancient and patient.

She whispered:

“Bloom, petal. The garden’s watching.”

The recycled wind, sterile, temperature-controlled, laced with synthetic ozone, licked at the exposed skin above LUST’s collar. She lay prone, the rifle’s stock against her shoulder. Above her, Honey’s cluster pods hovered in a loose constellation, casting shifting shadows across the matte black of her EvoGel Carapace.

Seen from high above, LUST lies prone along a wet rooftop gantry with the rifle on its tripod pointing out over the edge, the city far below scattered with violet and blue columns of light.
The rifle's stock nestled like a lover's weight

Rezo stretched beneath her, jagged towers and flickering ambitions. The city didn’t grow; it accumulated, each generation stacking itself on the ruins of the last. She had a private verdict on it: nothing here was built to last, only to trend. The oldest spires sagged under newer needles of chrome and carbon-fibre. Acid burns pockmarked the lower levels, the slogans of dead conglomerates still clinging to them. One, half-erased but stubborn, flickered in dying neon: OPTIMIZE TOMORROW. Just beneath it, fresh and aggressive, a new tag pulsed in angry crimson:

GET MINTED OR GET MINCED.

Her neural lace filtered the assault of the city’s noise, advertisements clawing for bandwidth. Her HUD flashed warnings in rapid succession.

LUST exhaled through her nose, a sound that might have been a laugh if it weren’t so controlled. “Desperate season,” she murmured. The city thrived on this, on the frantic need to be seen, even if only for a cycle. She understood it better than most.

Dancers gyrated in cages of holographic flame, synced to whatever track was dominating the Rezo Heights charts. Screamers, paid or genuine, clutched at their faces for the feeds. Living billboards staggered through the crowd, their vocal cords altered to chant slogans:

Looking down into a domed market hall from an upper tier: dozens of screens showing weeping eyes, lips and dancers, holographic figures standing on plinths, crowds moving across the floor below through teal light and vapour.
A thousand screaming mouths, twice as many eyes

BLEED CLEAN, BABY!

WHO DOXED MY MOTHER?!

I’M SELLING MY BONES FOR LIKES!

A mascot in a fetal-pig suit shoved flyers into the hands of passersby, each one carrying the logo of an auto-fork insurance provider. No one glanced at it. The feeds would eat it up.

She could see the lines. The engagement vectors threading through the chaos, the way a crowd’s attention shifted before a trend broke, the way a single well-timed act could go viral. It wasn’t instinct; it was calculation. And LUST had always been very, very good at math.

Honey’s voice slid in, low and calm. “Crowd saturation at 98%. Visual channels primed. Audio feeds locked, minimal interference.”

“Copy,” LUST replied, her voice steady, almost gentle. There was a rhythm to this, too. A partnership.

The suit responded next, its tone clipped and soldier-precise, the voice modulated to sound like gravel and discipline.

The city exhaled around her, a living thing, oblivious. Somewhere in the neon-lit depths of the Trendplateau, a man was walking toward his final keystroke, his last line of code. He thought he was anonymous. He thought he was safe.

LUST smiled.

The crosshairs didn’t waver.
